Services We Provide

Play Therapy

Play is the natural way children express themselves, both literally and metaphorically. Play therapy is a therapeutic approach where children share their inner world: feelings, thoughts, stories, and experiences. Through the therapeutic relationship, we guide children to make meaning, increase understanding, achieve resolution, rewrite stories, and create a safe container for emotional expression.

Dance/Movement Therapy

Dance/movement therapy is the therapeutic use of movement and the body to further the emotional, cognitive, social, and physical integration of the child. It is a way to express, relate to, and make sense of – in a body-mind integrative way – experiences and stories that make us who we are.

Art Therapy

Art therapy is a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem. A goal in art therapy is to improve or restore a client’s functioning and his or her sense of personal well-being. Art therapy practice requires knowledge of visual art (drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art forms) and the creative process, as well as of human development, psychological, and counseling theories and techniques.

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a form of psychotherapy that encourages the processing of distressing memories, which normally overwhelm a person’s coping abilities, through bilateral sensory input, including side-to-side eye movements, among other modes. It is successful with adults and children for integrating traumatic memories and lessening the intensity of such memories, thereby allowing individuals to develop more adaptive healing.

Family Therapy

(Including extended family, parents-only, and sibling support)

When the entire family is supported, the child can flourish. Family therapy at The Mariposa Center can incorporate any and all family members (even pets, sometimes!) in order to improve communication and understanding within a family. We use a variety of modalities within our family sessions; many of which are described here

Infant Mental Health

Infant mental health is defined as the healthy social and emotional development of a child from birth to 3 years. We are a part of a growing field of practice devoted to the promotion of healthy social and emotional development, the prevention of mental health problems in children, and the treatment of mental health problems of very young children in the context of their families. Infants cannot be separated from the context of their families, thus there is always a parent-infant component to this work.

Trauma-Informed Treatment

We use a variety of trauma-informed modalities including EMDR (as described above), trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and the neurosequential model of therapeutics when working with children and adults who have been exposed to trauma.

Early Intervention

We work with a number of early intervention programs to provide home-based services for families with children between the ages of 0 and 3 for a variety of social-emotional and mental health concerns from potty-training to maternal
post-partum depression and anything in between.
